Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is this wooden box??

A little help needed? Well, it's a very useful tool for hand quilters.

Who quilt in a frame. As I do.

I built it by myself, just assembling two parts:

a slab of plywood (from the hardware store) and a wooden box (from Ikea)

It has the advantage of being a very affordable item!!!

And you can easily made one, simply combining the two pieces

with glue and some small nails

Simple fabric basket as Xmas gifts

Sitting here, sewing Xmas little presents and waiting for the snow to come. Maybe for the new year's eve... too warm outside, now. So let's be patient, and keep on sewing and quilting.

This is my version of the vlijtig fabric basket (one of the many I made...)

You can find the tutorial to make it on your own here . The beautiful rose pins and the rusty jingle bells are from The Primitive Hare. And if you're wondering what kind of thread I put inside the basket, it's raw linen yarn.

Oggi è il giorno del Ringraziamento, e anche se in Italia non è considerato una festa da celebrare, sono del parere che ogni giorno possiamo trovare un motivo per essere grati.

During my short trip to the Carrefour Europeen de Patchwork, Val d'Argent, I have visited many exhibitions and shops. The quilts that I liked the most were those of Edyta Sitar, I was hoping to meet her at its booth, but unfortunately that day she was busy elsewhere for a course.

Durante il mio breve viaggio al Carrefour Europeen de Patchwork, in Val d'Argent, ho visitato molte mostre e negozi. I quilt che mi sono piaciuti di più sono stati quelli di Edyta Sitar, che speravo di incontrare al suo stand, ma purtroppo quel giorno era impegnata altrove per un corso.

I took many pictures, because as you know, I really like this traditional but innovative at the same time style (see for example the use of batik).

Ho scattato molte foto, perché come certamente saprete, questo stile tradizionale ma innovativo allo stesso tempo (vedi ad esempio l'uso dei batik) mi piace molto.

I may not be a great photographer ...

So di non essere una grande fotografa...

But I'm sure, thanks to these quilts, that you'll forgive me ...

Ma sono sicura che, grazie a questi quilt, mi perdonerete....

Se nella mia macchina ci fossero ancora le pellicole fotografiche tradizionali, potrei portarne metri e metri al fotografo per lo sviluppo di tutte le immagini di NYC che ho scattato (e quelle che non ho fatto in tempo a cogliere, le ho ben impresse nel cuore). What a wonderful place!

If my camera had traditional photographic film, I might bring yards of it to the photographer for the development of all the pictures I took in NYC (and those that I have not had time to take, I have imprinted in my mind and heart, you bet ).

It's a very useful tool, expecially for appliqueing or hand quilting on small quilts

(the heavy weight keeps in place the quilt while you pull a little to work on it)

Prima di salutarvi, voglio lasciarvi una foto della mia Oca sul "peso" che ho preparato per il corso di Yoko Saito lo scorso marzo. Si tratta di un utilissimo peso, poichè trattiene un piccolo quilt mentre lo state trapuntando o applicate dei pezzi minuti.

I've been very busy in recent weeks, a lot of things to do and no time at all for blogging :o(

I'm working on the samplers for the Quilt Finishes class, there are many variations on this theme and I have to choose some of them all, because otherwise only a single afternoon would not be enough...

Sono stata molto presa nelle ultime settimane, così tante cose da fare e nemmeno un minuto libero per il blog :o(
Sto preparando i sampler per il corso di rifiniture, ci sono molte varianti sul tema tuttavia dovrò sceglierne alcune fra tutte, perchè altrimenti un solo pomeriggio non basterebbe

I have heard in recent days that the course of hand quilting at the Fiera di Parma is confirmed (the class is full, registrations are closed). I take this opportunity to thank all those who have registered, it will be my pleasure to meet them on May 15 and work together.

Mi è stato comunicato nei giorni scorsi che il corso di hand quilting alla Fiera di Parma è stato confermato (la classe è completa, le iscrizioni sono chiuse). Last Friday I went to Abilmente hobby and crafts fair with my mom and my dear friend Fiorella: we visited all booths, and we stopped at many of them. We were looking for one-of-a-kind opportunities: do you know those beautiful-beautiful-beautiful scraps of fabric at never seen prices? Well, we do know... So we bought some (yards) of very good fabric, some useful tools and notions, and we met a lot of friends...

this is the more important event for me.

These in black and white are for a sweet ruffle skirt, from 1° Laboratorio, Noventa (PD)

Venerdì scorso sono andata ad Abilmente Primavera, alla fiera di Vicenza, insieme alla mia mutti e alla mia cara amica Fiorella: abbiamo camminato tutto il giorno, visto e rivisto tutti gli stand, e da alcuni ci siamo anche fermate. Molto sensibili, come tutte le quilter, alle "occasioni irripetibili": avete presente quei tessuti belli-belli-belli a dei prezzi mai visti? Oh, noi li avevamo ben presenti, tant'è vero che ne abbiamo aquistati alcuni (metri) di ottima qualità, oltre ad attrezzature, aghi, filati, e... abbiamo incontrato tante amiche.

Questo è stato l'avvenimento più importante della giornata, per me.

How to position quilting designs on a wholecloth - Come posizionare i motivi della quiltatura su un top di un unico tessuto

A few words about positioning quilting designs/stencils on a wholecloth top; this is one among several methods you can use, and it works well for small/medium size tops.

Alcuni cenni su come posizionare i disegni per la quiltatura su un top in cui non ci sono nè blocchi, nè appliquè a farci da guida, ma un unico tessuto chiamato "wholecloth". Questo è solo uno tra i diversi metodi che potete provare ad utilizzare, ed è particolarmente adatto ai top di grandezza piccola o media.

As usual, I post some pictures so the technique is more understandable

Come di consueto, vi mostro qualche immagine, così la tecnica di base è più chiara

For this wholecloth table runner (center panel size is 50" x 21") I used a transparent paper such as that for dress patterns, the same size of the center panel. First I drew the center lines, perpendicular to each other, then the two diagonals. Last but not least, I drew an angle of 45 degrees on each short side. This is the most important work, is the basis of the design and should be as accurate as possible

Per questo progetto che misura, nel pannello centrale, 127 cm x 54 cm circa, ho utilizzato la comune carta trasparente su cui solitamente si disegnano i cartamodelli di sartoria.

Per prima cosa ho tracciato le linee centrali, perpendicolari l'una all'altra, poi le due diagonali. Infine, ho disegnato du angoli di 45° in corrispondeza dei due lati corti. Questa è la parte più importante del lavoro, è la base del disegno e deve essere quanto più precisa possibile.

From now on, everything depends on the setting you want to give to the design on the top: I chose a classic central medallion motif, with feathers on the corners and a stencil to fill in the background. The main thing though is to rely on lines drawn on the paper pattern to position harmoniously your designs, following specific references to center the chosen patterns with respect to the axes and angles

Da ora in avanti, tutto dipende dal tipo di impostazione che desiderate dare al disegno: io ho scelto un classico medaglione centrale con motivi agli angoli ed uno stencil di riempimento sullo sfondo. L'essenziale comunque è affidarsi alle linee tracciate sul cartamodello per posizionare armoniosamente i disegni, seguendo riferimenti precisi per centrare bene i motivi scelti rispetto agli assi e agli angoli.

Trace your quilting motif with a quilting pencil (put the pattern under your top, and follow the design underneath)

Tracciate con un'apposita matita per tessuti il disegno, centrandolo o comunque posizionandolo correttamente, ponendo il cartamodello sotto il top e seguendone le linee)

If you are using a quilting stencil, simply follow the diagonal or center lines underneath to position it properly, then trace your design

Se invece state utilizzando uno stencil, vi basterà seguire le linee (diagonali, mediane, ecc.) sul cartamodello sottostante per un corretto posizionamento del disegno. Una volta individuato, tracciate il motivo.

Hand quilting is my favorite form of craftsmanship expression (and I've no doubt you do know it!), and today I want to begin to show you (hand quilting is, first of all, a very visual thing) some techniques that I use regularly.

La quiltatura tradizionale a mano è la mia forma di espressione creativa preferita (e non ho dubbi sul fatto che ormai tutti voi lo sapete!), così oggi ho pensato di iniziare a illustrarvi (perchè il quilting è prima di tutto una cosa che si deve vedere ed è complicato o quantomeno incompleto spiegarlo a parole) alcune delle tecniche che uso abitualmente.

Avete mai provato a quiltare con il pollice?

The reason to learn and practice thumb quilting is that sometimes we need to quilt from bottom to top. How can we do that, without having to turn our hoop?

La ragione per cui è utile imparare e fare pratica con questo metodo è che, in alcuni casi, dobbiamo quiltare partendo dal basso e muovendoci verso l'alto. Come riusciamo a farlo, se non ci è possibile ruotare il lavoro? (per esempio se stiamo utilizzando un telaio fisso a pavimento)

I use to wear Ted's thumb thimble (named from quilter Ted Storm, who developed it) and, on index finger of my left hand, under the quilt surface, a needleglider as follows:

Io uso questo ditale sul dito pollice della mano destra, si chiama Ted's thumb thimble, dal nome di Ted Storm, la quilter che lo ha ideato. Sul dito indice della mano sinistra, che sta sotto il quilt, io uso uno speciale ditale di ceramica del tipo "needleglider":

Then I gentle pick the needle into the small cup on the thimble

At this point, I gentle start pushing the perpendicular needle into the quilt, until it grabs the needleglider under the surface. I turn the needle point up and as far as I see it I restart pushing the needle (carefully perpendicular to the quilt) down. I go on quilting, one stitch after another, 'til I put five or sixstitches on the needle. Then, I pull the needle out and start again.

It needs a little practice, and patience, but good results are soon to come. Tiny stitches are a good result, I agree, but I think evenness is even better. Take your time, a good place to sit, an appropriate light, and quilt a lot, looking for evenness.

Quiltare (non solo con il pollice) richiede un po' di pratica, e di pazienza, ma i risultati non tardano ad arrivare se sarete costanti. I punti piccoli sono senza dubbio un buon risultato, sono d'accordo, ma penso che la regolarità rappresenti il vero traguardo. Me and my twins (aged 4) had an adventure, today, at the Post Office.

I had to ship the mug rugs that I had sewn for the swap. For sure, people who were in that building won't never forget us. Of course, they promised me in advance they'd be calm, and I felt very relaxed about it. Uh uh... the twins have made such a confusion that I was ashamed... I have not been able to keep them quiet even for a minute. Few minutes later, came the postmaster who asked: "what's goin' on here?"

Uh uh... if I could, I would sink into the ground. But obviously, I couldn't.

I took my little ones' hands and I went out, apologizing for the mess.... Believe me, there are times I'm not very proud of my twins... But I love them so much! First of all I scolded them, then I forgot them, and in the end I embraced them... Mine is always a mum's heart

The deadline is february 15, but I wanna be sure I won't be late... so tomorrow I ship the two mug rugs I made for the Quilting Gallery swap I joined last mont. I put in each pocket a small Italian honey bag and a fruit flavored tea bag, just to let taste something from my country. Hoping my "secret partner" in this swap like hand quilting, I send her a needle puller as a small gift from me.

I sewed a small label on the back

and now I just have to wait for the day when I will find my mug rugs in the mailbox...

I wonder which side of the world they will come from...

I'm spending my Sunday baking and quilting, isn't this a perfect world?

Oggi trascorro la mia domenica cuocendo il pane e quiltando,

non è forse questo un mondo perfetto?

We bake our bread almost everyday, so we're always looking for new yummy recipes

Sforniamo il pane fresco quasi ogni giorno,

in casa, così siamo sempre alla ricerca di nuove ricette

Oggi abbiamo provato questo "pane con latte di soia e semi tostati"

(ricetta per MdP)

Ingredienti:

300 gr. latte di soia

2 cucchiai olio evo

2 cucchiaini sale fino

1 cucchiaino zucchero di canna

230 gr. semola rimacinata di grano duro

230 gr. farina “0”

1 bustina di lievito secco tipo “Mastro Fornaio”

50 gr. semi misti leggermente tostati (zucca, girasole, pinoli)

Immettere nell’ordine gli ingredienti nel cestello della MdP, impostare il programma “solo impasto” della durata di 1 ora e mezza circa. Al termine, accendete il forno ad una temperatura di 250°; nel frattempo, con le mani leggermente unte d’olio, prelevare l’impasto lievitato a disporlo su un tagliere. Velocemente e senza maneggiarlo troppo, tagliate a pezzettini delle dimensioni di un pugno (piccolo) e distribuiteli sulla placca del forno ricoperta di apposita carta antiaderente. Infornate e dopo un paio di minuti abbassate la temperatura a 200°; cuocete per 15-18 minuti finché i panini sono ben dorati e croccanti. Togliere dal forno e porre a raffreddare su una griglia, a temperatura ambiente.

Bread with soy milk and roasted seeds - Recipe for bread machine

Ingredients:

300 gr. soy milk (10.5 oz.)

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon brown sugar

230 gr. durum wheat semolina (8.10 oz.)

230 gr. flour "0" (8.10 oz.)

1 packet of dry yeast (0.25 oz.)
50 gr. (1.75 oz.) lightly toasted mixed seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, pine nuts)

Enter the ingredients in the previous order in the MB inner bowl, and set the "dough only" program, lasting 1 hour and a half. When finished, turn the oven at a temperature of 250 degrees (480 if Fahrenheit); in the meantime, with your hands lightly greased with oil, remove the leavened dough to place it on a cutting board. Quickly and without too handle, cut it into pieces the size of a fist (small) and distribute them on a baking tray covered with greaseproof paper special. Start baking and after a couple of minutes turn the temperature down to 200 degrees (390 if Fahrenheit) , bake for 15-18 minutes until rolls are golden brown and crispy. Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool at room temperature.

Sunday sewing mornin'..... Domenica mattina si cuce

I'm sewing and quilting for Christmas on its way, and on Sunday, very early in the mornin', I find the perfect time. In the silent home, I grab my cup of coffee, go to my crafts room and switch on the sewing machine: the day is dawning in the best way.

Sto cucendo e trapuntando per il Natale ormai alle porte, e la domenica, molto presto al mattino, trovo che sia il momento perfetto. Nella casa addormentata e silenziosa, preparo la mia tazza di caffè e la porto nella stanza dei miei giochi, poi accendo la macchina per cucire: il giorno sta cominciando nel modo migliore.

I bought this wooden candle carrier at Living 24 in Treviso, its so pretty to me.

I'm very happy and excited that the ladies who attended my basic hand quilting class enjoyed it, so now me and Alessandra are planning an advanced level class to be held before Christmas. Thank you so much.

Dalle prime piogge come ogni anno in questo periodo si intuisce che ci siamo lasciati l’estate alle spalle; se saremo fortunati qui al Nord avremo ancora dei bei giorni per l’estate di San Martino, in novembre. Ma non sono dispiaciuta, con settembre inizia la stagione che preferisco, con i colori ed i profumi che amo di più. L’autunno oggi si vede chiaramente fuori della mia finestra, abbiamo da poco traslocato e questo è il mio nuovo orizzonte:

In our new home I’ve found, at least, the right place for my sewing room, a small place but with a big window and a good light all day long.

I’ve been working during all last week to clean, then to arrange the furniture, my fabrics and tools.

Per il momento sto sperimentando questa postazione lavoro, con un’area per il taglio ed un’altra per il cucito, in quest’ultima ho posizionato il mio tavolo Sew Ezi. Farò un periodo di prova, per capire se è confortevole oppure se posso fare delle modifiche man mano che mi si presenta l’occasione per migliorare qualcosa. Ho iniziato subito a tagliare e cucire, e sto ultimando una borsa che ho soprannominato Apple-a-day (“una mela al giorno…”). Dopotutto, settembre è il mese delle mele…

At present, I’m testing this working area, with a place just for cutting fabrics or drawing patterns and another place for sewing at my Sew Ezi table. I will find if it’s comfortable or if I can improve it with some adjustments. Of course, yesterday I immediately started to cut and sew a new “Apple-a-day” bag. After all, September is apples month, isn’t it?

And so, my dear big brother's wedding quilt is finally ready... A week ago I sent it to U.S. and I was happy to hear by my sister-in-law that it arrived safe in Florida, the Sunshine State.

Ecco, dopo una lunga gestazione, il quilt nuziale di mio fratello è finalmente terminato; una settimana fa l'ho spedito per gli Stati Uniti e ho avuto la conferma da parte di mia cognata che è arrivato sano e salvo in Florida, lo stato in cui splende sempre il sole ("The sunshine state" è il motto della Florida).

Actually, the batting I choosed for this quilt is quite heavy... so I told to my brother they could use it in Klondike, too... (maybe in Florida will never be such a cold weather...)

L'ovattina che ho utilizzato per questo quilt a dire il vero è abbastanza pesante, così ho detto a mio fratello che forse un giorno potranno usarlo anche nel Klondike... (forse in Florida non farà mai abbastanza freddo...)

The first appeal (or I should say "fatal attraction") in a quilt book - in my opinion - is its cover. Expecially when we go shopping on line, most of times we decide to buy or not to buy that particular book after a simply look at the cover. Easy. Fast. But not always satisfactory! Sometimes the pages inside are not full of quilts or ideas good for us, simply because it wasn't what we were looking for. Cover can be misleading. But I've found a good trick, to preview new and bestseller books, and make a better choice. Some quiltshops on line have a very good selection of inside images. My favorite is Connecting Threads, then Amazon (click look inside).
Take a look, and enjoy!

Il primo richiamo (o forse dovrei parlare di "attrazione fatale" esercitato da un libro sui quilt - a mio parere - sta nella copertina. Quando facciamo shopping in rete, o comunque tutte le volte che non abbiamo la possibilità di sfogliare le pagine per renderci conto del contenuto, basiamo la nostra decisione solo sull'impressione che abbiamo tratto dalla copertina. Facile e veloce. Ma, di sicuro, non sempre soddisfacente: a volte le pagine non contengono foto o istruzioni che ci soddisfano, perchè non rappresentano quello che stavamo cercando. La copertina, quindi, può essere fuorviante. Qualche tempo fa ho scoperto che alcuni siti internet mettono a disposizione le immagini di alcune pagine per vedere in anteprima il contenuto di molti nuovi libri e anche di bestseller. I miei preferiti sono Connecting Threads e Amazon (i libri sono contrassegnati da "look inside"). Provate a dare un'occhiata anche voi.

Wedding Quilt - Trapunta nuziale

My beloved brother Tiziano has been living in the U.S. since 1998. He and his italian girlfriend got married in 2007, and I've been working on their wedding quilt for these years, in my spare time. Now I'm quilting the outer borders, and I am planning about sending the completed quilt by my mum and my daughter, who are leaving for my brother's home next july (I'm about to become Aunt!).

Mio fratello Tiziano vive stabilmente negli USA da molti anni, il 1998 per la precisione. Lui e la sua fidanzata, italiana, si sono sposati nell'estate del 2007, e naturalmente, per l'occasione, io promisi a mia cognata un quilt nuziale. Le mie migliori intenzioni di terminare il quilt in tempi brevi sono di volta in volta naufragate nei mille impegni quotidiani, la famiglia, l'ufficio, e via dicendo. Ho lavorato alla realizzazione della trapunta per questi tre anni, nel poco tempo libero a mia disposizione, e ora finalmente sono giunta a quiltare i bordi esterni. Desidero terminare il manufatto in tempo per metterlo nella valigia di mia figlia che, con mia madre, partirà per andare da mio fratello tra circa un mese. (Sto per diventare zia!)

I've been very busy last week... with my children, but also with just a little bit of sewing, because my right elbow aches and I cannot quilting at the moment... So I've been cutting, and stitching to make this bag with lots of pockets:

Sono stata molto presa ultimamente... con i miei figli, ma anche con un po' di lavoretti di cucito, visto che mi duole il gomito destro e per il momento ahimè non posso quiltare... Così ho tagliato, cucito e alla fine ecco il risultato:

In the original pattern there are some big long hearts appliqué on the pockets, but I prefer my option because it is plain and simple (only two small ceramic button hearts). I'm planning to bring this bag at quilting classes, but also in my next quilting trip, to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK.

Il disegno originale prevedeva alcuni grandi cuori allungati applicati sulle tasche, ma erano decisamente troppo country per i miei gusti, così mi sono limitata a due soli bottoni in ceramica, cuciti agli estremi della tracolla. Mi sembra che il risultato, più semplice e lineare, ne abbia tratto beneficio.

and Amish Women lives.

Durante l'ultimo mese ho letto due libri molto interessanti, uno sulla possibilità di vivere senza essere oppressi dalla tecnologia e l'altro su alcuni aspetti salienti della vita quotidiana di alcune donne Amish.

Eric Brende, "Better Off. Flipping the switch on technology", Harper Collins Publishers, Inc.

Eric Brende, "Meglio Senza", Ponte alle Grazie Editore, Milano 2005

On a mission to prove that modern technological advances make lives more inconvenient and less healty, the author and his wife lived for 18 months among an energy-free farming community.

L'autore, ricercatore del MIT di Boston, ci racconta una storia vera: la sua provocatoria avventura assieme alla moglie Mary in una comunità rurale molto simile a quelle Amish.

Durante questi 18 mesi di "esperimento", Brende cerca di trovare, se esiste, un equilibrio tra la troppa e la troppo poca meccanizzazione o, ancora meglio, un modo per trovare quell'equilibrio dovunque ci si trovi.

Little has been written about Amish women. How are they regarded within their highly structured community? How whole are they individuals? This insightful, gently probing, yet always respectful text opens a door to this nearly hidden world. The Author, a woman reared in an Amish family, profiles 10 Amish women.

Non ho trovato la versione italiana di questo libro, ma lo segnalo ugualmente perchè pur essendo in inglese è di facile lettura e non troppo corposo (122 pagine). L'autrice, nata e cresciuta in una famiglia Amish, nell'età adulta ha compiuto una scelta di vita che l'ha condotta a lasciare la comunità, pur rimanendo profondamente legata ai valori ed alle tradizioni della sua infanzia. Il suo punto di vista, nel raccontare le storie di queste 10 donne Amish, non è dunque quello di un osservatore esterno, ma di una attenta conoscitrice della realtà in grado di percepire molte sfumature e di ben interpretare il pensiero delle protagoniste.

Come si vivono i preparativi di una cerimonia nuziale in una famiglia Amish? Come si affronta il lutto per la perdita di un figlio ancora piccolo? Come si può far convivere con le regole della comunità un'indole artistica? Molte risposte e alcuni punti di riflessione.

Questo quilt fa parte dell'esposizione "Art & Patchwork" ospitata nell'edizione primaverile di "Abilmente" presso la Fiera di Vicenza. E' il mio preferito, mi piacciono molto sia l'esecuzione che l'effetto cromatico. E' stato realizzato dalle quilter appartenenti all'associazione nazionale austriaca, la Patchwork Gilde Austria. Davvero brave!

At least! This is my japanese bag, flower among flowers, as a contribute to Yoko Saito.

Finalmente! Questa è la mia borsa giapponese, fiore tra i fiori, in omaggio a Yoko Saito.

Tomorrow I'll bring this bag to Abilmente Fair in Vicenza to enter it to a contest organized by Agomago quilt shop in honor of Yoko Saito who'll teach her patchwork class next April in Florence. I greatly admire the work of Saito.

Domani porterò questa borsa ad Abilmente Vicenza, e la consegnerò ad Agomago per iscriverla alla competizione organizzata in onore di Yoko Saito, che terrà un suo corso a Firenze il prossimo aprile. Sono una ammiratrice del lavoro di Mrs. Saito.

Last week I've been in Rome, and, suddenly, I've noticed that Spring is on it's way. Wow!

Planning a journey - Programma di viaggio

Well, maybe it's because I'm planning a journey with my quilting friends, anyway, I was looking for somehing to carry with me my small quilting tools while traveling. Usually my tote bag is always in a mess, and most of times is very hard to find the right needle or thread in a few seconds, so I tried to piece a quilter chatelaine. I found one in the Thimbleberries website, I'm fond of these books and fabrics since I was an absolute beginner quilter, and I still appreciate the patterns, from time to time, when I want to make something warm and cozy, in very rich shades of fall colors. This is my new tiny bag, with a small pocket on the backside, and room enough for scissors, thread, needles and thimbles.

Forse sarà perchè sto programmando un viaggio con alcune amiche quilter, comunque ero alla ricerca di un modello per realizzare una borsina (minuscola) per portare con me tutta la mia piccola attrezzatura per quiltare. Normalmente, quando sono in viaggio, la mia borsa è di per sè un mare magnum in cui sarebbe difficile trovare persino il passaporto in tempi accettabili, figuraiamoci cosine piccine tipo aghi e filo. Ho trovato quello che cercavo sul sito Thimbleberries, sono sempre stata attratta dai quilt e dai tessuti di Lynette Jensen fin da quando ero una quilter alle prime armi, e devo ammettere che apprezzo ancora queste pattern, specialmente se desidero realizzare un quilt caldo e confortevole nei tipici toni caldi e ricchi dell'autunno. Questa è la mia borsina, con una tasca sul retro e spazio sufficiente all'interno per le forbici, il filo, gli aghi e i ditali. Cosa si puo' desiderare di più dico io!

STILL WORKIN'ON - LAVORI ANCORA IN CORSO

As you can see, I'm still workin' on my japanese bag backing. It may be seem an endless work, but it is really additive to me, and I don't notice time passing while I'm hand quilting.

Come certo avrete notato, sono ancora al lavoro con il pannello della mia borsa giapponese. Puo' apparire come un lavoro infinito, ma è così coinvolgente per me che non mi accorgo affatto del tempo che passa mentre quilto a mano.

Generally, I'm not always working on this project, (I do need to follow more than one at the same time, it's liberating) so I never know when I finish it. I'm happy to quilt, and that's all.

In generale, non lavoro mai ad un solo progetto per volta, o a questo in particolare (anzi direi che ho bisogno di progettare, tagliare, cucire ecc. ecc. più cose contemporaneamente, è liberatorio non avere per forza e sempre una scadenza) così non so mai quando avrò finito. Ma sono felice quando trapunto, e questo è l'importante.

When I was in Houston at the International Quilt Festival, last October, I felt in love with a little-handy-portable Sew Ezi sewing table, and after I've tried it at the booth, when I returned home I decided to buy one, and so did my dear friend Vania, too.

Lo scorso ottobre, quando mi trovavo a Houston per l'International Quilt Festival, ho visto un tavolo da cucito che rispondeva esattamente alle mie esigenze: piccolo, maneggevole, portatile! Le gentilissime hostess dello stand Sew Ezi mi hanno fatto accomodare, l'ho provato e quando sono tornata in Italia ho deciso di ordinarne uno, così come pure la mia cara amica Vania.

I really miss a quiet room to sew, me and my hubby are looking for a bigger home, but 'til that day... I can sew everywhere and it really helps me to find time to do it!

Mi manca davvero un posto tranquillo dove cucire, in effetti è anche per questo motivo che stiamo cercando una casa più grande... Fino a quel giorno, comunque, ho trovato il sistema per cucire ovunque, e devo dire che questo mi aiuta veramente a trovare un po' di tempo libero per poterlo fare!

What distinguishes an antique Lancaster Amish quilt? ~ Cosa contraddistingue un autentico quilt Amish antico della contea di Lancaster?

Still talking about Amish quilts, and there’s another sliding little green door for you, my friends: my trip as Alice in Wonderland goes on (see previous post here).

Dates: Made between 1880 – 1940, often considered the Golden Era of Amish quiltmaking.

Shape: Quilts are generally 70” – 80” square.
Patterns: Center Diamond, Bars, and Sunshine and Shadow patterns are the most popular.
Colors: Colors are bright jewel tone of purples, royal blues, bright greens, and wine.
Fabrics: Fabric choices are almos always fine wools for the quilt top and cottons for the quilt backing. The fabrics are plain, without designs.
Quilting: Quilting is extensive and elaborate and often includes motifs of feathers, baskets, tulips, and pumpkin seeds.
Workmanship: Expert craftsmanship is shown in both piece-work and quilting.
Borders: Borders are unusually wide and corner blocks are frequently used.
Bindings: Bindings are distinctively wide, measuring 1-2 inches.

Parliamo ancora di quilt Amish, ed ecco pronta ad aprirsi c’è un’altra porticina verde per voi, amiche: il mio viaggio, come Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, continua. (per saperne di più, vedete anche il post precedente).

Possiamo leggere le risposte alla nostra domanda: Cosa contraddistingue un autentico quilt Amish antico, proveniente dalla Lancaster County?

Periodo: i manufatti appartenenti all’intervallo di tempo tra il 1880 ed il 1940, considerato come l’Età D’Oro dei quilt Amish;
Forma: i quilt sono in genere quadrati di dimensioni variabili tra 178 ed i 213 cm di lato.
Motivo : Quadrato nel quadrato, Strisce verticali, Giro intorno al mondo sono i più popolari.
Colori: tutte le tonalità brillanti e luminose di violetti, blu, verdi e bordeaux.
Tessuti: Quasi sempre sono privilegiate le lane leggere per il top ed il cotone per il retro. I tessuti sono in tinta unita, non sono ammessi gli stampati.
Trapunto: molto fitto ed elaborato, spesso include motivi di piume, cestini, tulipani ed i caratteristici “semi di zucca”.
Fattura: L’abilità nella lavorazione traspare sia dall’assemblaggio dei vari pezzetti di stoffa, sia dalla perfezione nel trapunto.
Bordi: sono insolitamente ampi e di frequente vengono inseriti dei blocchi ai quattro angoli.
Bordino esterno di rifinitura: segno distintivo di questi quilt, è sempre di spessore abbastanza ampio, in genere 2,5 – 5 cm.

Yesterday I and my hubby went to Milan to have a one-day-holiday, with a lot of things to see.
Ieri io e mio marito siamo andati a Milano per trascorrere una giornata di vacanza, avevamo in programma moltissime cose da vedere.

We booked in advance tickets for the Edward Hopper exhibition at Palazzo Reale, and fortunately we went beyond the long queue of shivering people, waiting for two hours or more to enter.

Avevamo prenotato in anticipo i biglietti per la prima grande mostra di Edward Hopper in Italia, e grazie a questo abbiamo fortunatamente evitato la lunga coda di persone infreddolite che stavano aspettando da più di due ore per entrare a Palazzo Reale.

We enjoyed the show (more than 160 superb paintings) just in time: it was the penultimate day of the exhibition.

Abbiamo potuto apprezzare la mostra del più popolare e noto artista americano del XX secolo (oltre 160 opere tra cui celebri capolavori come Morning Sun) appena in tempo, infatti oggi chiuderà i battenti.

During our stay in Milan we took time to go to the terraces of Duomo and take some pictures of the spires of the cathedral in the sunset light.

Nel nostro girovagare libero per la città, non ci siamo lasciati sfuggire l'occasione di fare una passeggiata sulle terrazze del Duomo, e scattare così alcune foto delle guglie nella luce soffusa di un tramonto invernale.

What makes a good quilter? ~ Quali sono le regole per essere una brava Quilter?

I saw this little green door (I am feeling like Alice in Wonderland…)hung on a wall of the People’s Place Quilt Museum in Pennsylvania. I slid it, here for you the precious rules to follow to be a good Quilter:

1. Choose a pattern with a skill level that matches with your ability.
2. Select fabrics compatible to the pattern .
3. Coordinate fabric colors to be visually pleasing.
4. Cut fabric pieces accurately; sew together precisely.
5. Applique stitches neatly and inconspicuously.
6. Mark quilting lines proportionate to the design.
7. Choose batting of appropriate quality and thickness.
8. Quilt small and evenly spaced stitches.
9. Keep fabric taut in frame while quilting in order to avoid puckering.
10. Hide quilting threads knot well.
11. Square off quilt before attaching binding.
12. Miter corners on binding.
13. Sew binding on flat without puckering, using small hidden stitches.
14. Sign and date back of finished quilts.
15. Journal and photograph all your quilted creations.

Ho notato questa porticina verde (nel dirlo mi sento un po’ Alice nel paese delle meraviglie..) appesa ad una parete del People’s Place Quilt Museum in Pennsylvania. Seguendo l’invito, l’ho fatta scorrere ed ho trovato le risposte alla domanda. Ecco dunque svelate le regole d’oro per definire una brava Quilter:

1. Scegliete un disegno adatto alla vostra abilità
2. Utilizzate tessuti compatibili con il motivo scelto
3. Fate in modo che i colori si accompagnino tra loro armoniosamente
4. Tagliate i pezzetti di tessuto accuratamente, cuciteli con precisione
5. Se cucite delle applicazioni, fate in modo che i punti siano ordinati e il meno appariscenti possibile
6. I motivi per il trapunto devono essere sempre ben proporzionati rispetto ai blocchi
7. Scegliete accuratamente l’ovattina, che deve essere di buona qualità e della giusta consistenza
8. Trapuntate con piccoli punti uniformi
9. Tenete il top teso sul telaio mentre trapuntate per evitare grinze
10. Nascondete bene i nodi di inizio-fine della trapunta tura
11. Squadrate sempre il quilt prima di attaccare il bordino di rifinitura
12. Usate il metodo con gli angoli mitrati per il bordino di rifinitura
13. Cucite questo bordino tenendo il quilt ben disteso e sul retro rifinite con piccoli punti nascosti
14. Firmate e datate sempre sul retro il vostro quilt
15. Tenete un registro, o un diario, e fotografate tutti i vostri lavori

As many other online products, for example sewing and patchwork patterns, I’ve recently discovered there are a lot of Ebooks to download (in .pdf format) from publisher websites, at a reasonable price (less than regular printed printed books and without shipping charges). The most interesting thing is that some out-of-print bestseller books are now downloadable in few minutes, avoiding unsuccessful flea market or garage sale researches. For the last two or three years, I’ve been looking for a Barbara Brackman’s book on antique quilts dating (“Clues in the calico”), but it was sold out. Today I found it searchin on www.ctpub.com.

Another American well-known publisher, Martingale & Co. (That Patchwork Place) offers on his wbsite www.patchwork.com some quiltings and crafts Ebooks. For sure there are many more, maybe you can report to me, I’ll be glad to share with all quilting friends!

Come molti altri prodotti venduti on line, ad esempio pattern per il cucito o il patchwork, ho recentemente scoperto che sono disponibili molti libri americani sui quilt (e su vari altri hobby creativi) in formato elettronico .pdf, scaricabili direttamente dal sito web dell’editore, ad un prezzo inferiore rispetto alle edizioni rilegate e, ovviamente, senza spese di consegna. La cosa più interessante, a mio avviso, al di là del risparmio sul prezzo di copertina, è il fatto che si possono trovare alcuni testi che erano esauriti e fuori stampa, il tutto stando comodamente a casa propria e senza infruttuose ricerche nei vari mercatini (anche virtuali e magari non proprio affidabilissimi). Da qualche tempo a questa parte stavo cercando senza successo un libro di Barbara Brackman sulla datazione dei quilt antichi, “Clues in the calico”, pensate che soddisfazione quando, in una decina di minuti, non solo l’avevo trovato su www.ctpub.com ma anche già scaricato sul mio PC!

Un altro editore americano molto conosciuto, che pubblica i suoi testi con l’etichetta “That Patchwork Place, ha iniziato a mettere a disposizione questi testi elettronici; una lista di titoli (ancora un po’ scarna, ma in via di implementazione) è disponibile su www.patchwork.com . Di certo vi saranno molte altre case editrici, non solo americane, che hanno iniziato ad offrire ai propri lettori questo tipo di servizio, se avete qualche segnalazione da fare in proposito sarà molto gradita.

Reading an italian magazine named "Donna Moderna" (sounds something like "A modern woman") I found this site where, in a few seconds and totally free, you can create a calendar adding your favorite pictures: quilts, cross stitch sampler, family beloved ones, landscapes.

Sfogliando il settimanale "Donna Moderna" mentre aspettavo mia figlia dal dentista, ho scoperto questo sito dove, in pochi secondi e del tutto gratuitamente, possiamo creare i nostri calendari personalizzati aggiungendo le nostre foto preferite: quilt, punto croce, famiglia, paesaggi ecc.

You can choose between different possibilities: by month or year, vertical or horizontal layout

Ci sono alcune opzioni tra cui scegliere sia la periodicità (annuale o mensile) sia il tipo di orientamento della pagina (orizzontale o verticale), in alternativa si puo' anche stampare il formato "da tavolo" (molto pratico in ufficio)

New Year's Quilt Projects - Progetti per l'anno nuovo

I am working on a new sampler for a basic patchwork class I'll teach , what a mess in my living room! To take a break, I put a cup of coffee on my window sill and make some new year's resolutions.

In questi giorni sto preparando un nuovo sampler per una classe di patchwork, come vi potrete immaginare la mia casa è cosparsa di pezzettini di tessuto e fili che vanno ad infilarsi dappertutto. Per prendermi una pausa, mi faccio una tazza di caffè, la appoggio sul davanzale della finestra e preparo mentalmente la mia lista di progetti per l'anno appena iniziato.

Every time I start a new project, either a beginner or an advanced level one, it's a special moment to me, 'cause I feel excited and relaxed in the same time, I'm not able to explain this sensation. When I am sewing and quilting for a class to come, I always think about my early days in patchwork and all my teachers.

Ogni volta che inizio a lavorare ad un nuovo progetto, sia esso per un corso base o per una classe più avanzata, è sempre un momento speciale per me, perchè mi sento carica di energia e rilassata allo stesso tempo... non sono capace di spiegare questa sensazione. Quando sto cucendo o quiltando per realizzare un manufatto da presentare ad un corso, il mio pensiero è rivolto, sempre, ai miei primi passi nel mondo del patchwork ed alle mie insegnanti che in tutti questi anni mi hanno aperto le porte di un nuovo universo.

To teach in a beginner patchwork class means to explain and show carefully all the basic techniques to cut, piece and quilt a sampler-project. Although I prefer hand quilting, in my opinion, it is correct to spend some time with students also explaining two of the most common forms of straight line machine quilting (in the ditch and grid), both of them done using the walking foot.

Insegnare le basi del patchwork significa spiegare e realizzare praticamente tutte le tecniche di base per tagliare, cucire e trapuntare il primo quilt. Anche se io prediligo la quiltatura a mano, mi sembra corretto impiegare proficuamente un po' di tempo durante le lezioni per illustrare due dei più comuni metodi di quiltatura a macchina (nella ripiegatura della stoffa e a reticolo), entrambi realizzati con il doppio trasporto.

The 2010 New Year's Day brings me a renewed joy in quilting. Our tradition is doing something special in this Day, hoping to do the same every day of the newborn year. So, today, among many other important things to me, I've been sewing and quilting for a few minutes, catching a good spell for the days to come.

Il primo giorno del nuovo anno porta con sè una rinnovata gioia nel tempo dedicato a quiltare. La nostra tradizione, in Italia, è quella di fare qualcosa di speciale oggi nella speranza di poterlo fare in ogni giorno del 2010. Così oggi, tra le tante cose che sono speciali per me, ho dedicato qualche minuto anche al cucito e al quilting, facendo un incantesimo per i giorni a venire.

During the Christmas (or I should say "Quiltmas") Season, in my quilting garden some new flowers were born.

In questi giorni di Natale (in italiano il gioco di parole Christmas/Quiltmas non è traducibile, sorry) nel mio giardino sono nati alcuni piccoli fiori d'inverno.

I like to sew very small hexagons (these are 1,2 cm per side) they look gentle and elegant. I prefer japanese woven fabrics for their rich textures.

Mi piace cucire esagoni molto piccoli, questi sono di 1,2 cm di lato. Mi sembrano così delicati ed eleganti. Credo che contribuiscano molto i tessuti giapponesi tinti in filo, la loro trama/consistenza è gradevole al tatto prima ancora che alla vista.

In this new year's eve very small red berries are, most of time, the only colored spot in a cloudy winter sky. I take a good walk in the country, almost everyday, to spend some precious time with my eldest sons, and landscape is often unhappy like the three below:

Today here in Padua is a very extraordinary day, it has been snowing since yesterday night and now we have about 15 cm of a white soft blanket over everything! It usually doesn't happen, so now we are feelin' very excited to go out to play with our children.

But where are wool mittens?

Oggi per Padova è un giorno davvero eccezionale, sta nevicando da molte ore (già da ieri sera, a dire il vero) e ora, ovunque posiamo lo sguardo, vediamo una bianca e soffice coltre ricoprire silenziosa ogni cosa. Credo ci siano 15/18 cm. di neve fresca, normalmente qui non capita, ci sentiamo tutti molto eccitati all'idea di uscire fuori a giocare con i bambini.

L'anno ci sta lasciando... è per molti, questo, il momento dei bilanci, delle previsioni astrologiche, ma anche delle promesse fatte a noi stessi. Curiosamente, io non sento l'anno finire la notte di San Silvestro, o il giorno del mio compleanno (che cade il 29 maggio), ma quando finisce l'estate. Così, per questo motivo, in questo periodo non sono sintonizzata sul "passaggio" tra un periodo ed un altro, ma mi lascio coinvolgere volentieri dai miei cari nell'elezione del momento più bello, del libro più entusiasmante, della canzone dell'anno, del film numero uno, e chi più ne ha più ne metta.

And so this is Christmas.... I love listening to Christmas carols when I'm doing my chores, I sing, I sing, and my mind and my heart are wide open and warm in the music.

Some other old favorites at my home during the Cristmas Season are: berry wreaths, tree ornaments, little paper snowmen on the windows, and homemade chewey oatmeal cookies (with a little bit of ground coconut).

Non è meraviglioso farsi contagliare dalla magia del Natale, mentre il conto alla rovescia ci dice che mancano solo 15 giorni? In questo periodo amo particolarmente ascoltare canzoni natalizie mentre mi occupo della casa, e senza accorgermene finisco sempre per cantare, prima un po' sommessamente, poi mi lascio trasportare ed il cuore e la mente si aprono grazie alla musica ed al suo straordinario potere.

Come ogni famiglia ed ogni casa, anche noi abbiamo degli "evergreen" in questo periodo, cose che ci piace realizzare o acquistare, sempre rispettando questi temi: ghirlande ornamentali di bacche rosse, addobbi per l'albero, piccoli omini di neve ritagliati nella carta, colorati dai gemelli e attaccati alle finestre, biscotti fatti in casa con fiocchi d'avena e un pizzico di cocco.

Questa è la ricetta che mi ha dato Esther, sono buonissimi:

beat: 250 gr. margarine - 300 gr. sugar - 125 gr. molasses syrup (really too sweet for me)

add and beat: 2 eggs - vanille sugar - 1/2 teaspoon salt

350 gr. flour - 1 pk. baking powder - 1/2 tbs backing soda

350 gr. oatmeal - 1 cup coconut

bake till light brown (ca. 170 C°)

Mescolare bene 250 gr. margarina o burro, 300 gr. di zucchero, 125 gr.sciroppo d'acero se piace (io non lo metto perchè viene mooolto dolce)

Aggiungere e continuare a mescolare bene: 2 uova, una bustina di vanillina - 1/2 cucchiaino di sale, 350 gr. di farina bianca, 1 bustina di lievito istantaneo per dolci, 1/2 cucchiaio di bicarbonato di soda ad uso alimentare - 350 gr. di fiocchi d'avena e una tazza di cocco grattugiato (farina di cocco). Sagomate i biscotti appiattendoli ben bene.

Cuocete in forno a circa 170 C° finchè sono dorati.

It's a Sewing Day

Ho quasi terminato il table runner, manca ancora solo il sottopunto a mano per completare il binding. Si tratta di un progetto molto semplice e veloce, adatto anche a chi è alle prime armi. Per realizzare il blocco centrale della stella, mi sono divertita ad utilizzare uno speciale ruler che ho acquistato a Houston nello stand di Jodi Barrows. La tecnica su cui si basa questo ruler si chiama square in a square e, con un po' di pratica, permette di tagliare e assemblare moltissimi blocchi diversi. Ecco alcuni passaggi:

I've almost finished to piece and quilt my table runner, it needs only to hand sew the binding from the back side, and that's all. It wasn't really a challenge, because actually it's a very simple project, good for beginners too. But I had fun piecing and cutting the central star block using the square in a square ruler that I bought from Jodi Barrows at her booth in Houston Quilt Show. It's a very practical technique, and it needs only a little time to learn. Then you can use it for a variety of quilt blocks. Here there are some pictures of my work:

Questo è il centro della stella, si tratta di un blocco "quadrato nel quadrato", che in questo caso viene ottenuto senza tagliare e cucire triangoli; le strisce laterali vengono infatti prima cucite con il metodo dello strip piecing, poi rifinite con il ruler in un secondo momento. Con un po' di pratica, lo spreco di tessuto è davvero minimo, ed inoltre il blocco risultante è perfettamente squadrato e con tutti i margini di cucitura della misura desiderata.

This is called the "option 3" - Flying Geese. Notice that 1/4" seam allowance is only at right and left sides, not at the top (north) and bottom (south) sides.

Questo secondo passaggio è necessario per il taglio dei blocchi flying geese che formeranno i raggi della stella. Notate come il margine di cucitura di 6mm venga lasciato solo lateralmente e non sopra o sotto.

Now you know why: this is the way to cut in half and obtain two flying geese units!

Ora è chiaro il motivo dei margini differenziati: infatti è necessario praticare un taglio a metà, da lato a lato senza margini, per ottenere due unità flying geese.

Tutti i pezzettini combaciano perfettamente e sono pronti per essere assemblati nel blocco della Stella. Non ci sono calcoli complicati da fare, basta fare qualche prova e il gioco è fatto.

Christmas is on it's way...
Natale si avvicina...

As usual, in this season, I love to think about Christmas presents I wish I could do in time for all my (very very) beloved one.

Come di consueto, in questo periodo, mi piace pensare e progettare i doni natalizi che vorrei riuscire a realizzare in tempo per tutti i miei cari (quelli molto, molto speciali).

Last Sunday I've been working on a simply EQ6 kitchen table runner project. I wanted it a little bit country and, most of all, warm.

Domenica scorsa mi son messa al lavoro e ho realizzato con EQ6 un semplice progetto per una striscia da tavolo, adatta per la cucina. La immaginavo un po' country ma soprattutto dall'aspetto caldo e piacevole come la stagione richiede.

This week I'm cutting and sewing, I hope in a few days to be able to post a picture of the completed top.

Questa settimana, nei ritagli di tempo (è l'espressione perfetta per una quilter non trovate?), sto tagliando e cucendo; spero proprio nel giro di qualche giorno di essere in grado di pubblicare una foto del top completo.

This is New York, a (Brooklin) bridge over troubled water.

New York mi è apparsa ancora una volta come una città così ricca e piena di possibilità (forse il termine giusto è "densa") da essere faticosa da vivere per lungo tempo. In effetti, avere troppe possibilità finisce spesso per essere come non averne affatto, non si sa cosa fare, da che parte cominciare, perchè esitare e lasciarsi sfuggire le occasioni sarebbe un gran peccato. Si corre, ci si tuffa letteralmente da un taxi all'altro (è vero che qui a Manhattan i taxi, paragonati ai nostri, costano pochissimo, ma devi prenderne 20 al giorno!) e si vorrebbe poter approfittare di una galleria d'arte, degli sconti da Macy's, dei miliardi di bottoni e pizzi di M&J Trimmings (con scaffali che vanno da terra al soffitto). Ho visitato il Museo di Storia Naturale sulla 79ma, poi un salto indietro nel tempo a Central Park, qualche milione di window shopping e la giornata era già finita. Ma è così sempre, anche il tempo qui non basta mai, non ce n'è per tutto.

Il viaggio prosegue verso la Pennsylvania, prima tappa: Longwood Gardens. Road to Pennsylvania, first leg: Longwood Gardens. It's fall foliage time!

Ed ecco subito all'ingresso mi colpisce il gruppo di visitatori proprio davanti a me:

Sono donne Mennonite con i loro figli, le riprendo di spalle per non essere invadente, incutono rispetto.

Nei vari padiglioni dei Giardini scatto molte foto, per i colori della natura che sono prorompenti, senza dubbio. Alcuni accostamenti, nelle aiuole, sono particolarmente accattivanti come questo:

mi lascio catturare, ho sempre adorato i peperoncini...

e questa è la pianta a cui Madre Natura ha dato più coraggio:

Il melograno è simbolo di fertilità, dell'abbondanza, dell'energia vitale!

Si riprende il cammino verso la contea di Lancaster, i limiti di velocità qui sono molto contenuti, percio' i tempi di viaggio sembrano dilatarsi. Ecco qualche scatto di questa giornata:
